We decided to add a black screen with text at the end of the video so people can have a better understanding of what the movie is going to be about since that is what the biggest concern on the peer reviews. On the black screen, we put "Keep watching to follow them in their college baseball journey." Because of this change we had to make another change and it was putting the title of the movie at the beginning of the movie opener instead of the end. This is because we put the text at the end and it didn't look good with 2 black screens back to back at the end. We also tried to make the video clearer. It was hard because of how big the movie was but we ended up getting a clearer picture. 

Peer Reviews

 

Everyone said our camera angles were good so i'm glad to hear that because we worked hard on trying to incorporate different angles. Also people said they liked our song/audio choice which is good because we thought it was a good match as well. 

On the other hand, some people said they thought dialogue would have helped people understand the plot and some said that they understood what was going on the whole time. I am probably going to leave the music because it went well but maybe add a little dialogue when we are signing to college with Courtney (the recruiter). The whole point was there to be no dialogue and for the music to be intense and show how hard the athletes are working. I'm also glad people understood why we pointed at Courtney. 

There was a good idea presented to add brightness to the film, I'm not completely sure how to do that, but I will definitely look into that because it is a good idea.

The main concern from the peer reviews is that there was no dialogue. That was the whole point of our movie opener but we will think about adding dialogue at the end.

week 7 editing

- This week, we decided on the background music. As you can see in the photo, the green bar underneath the film is the music that I downloaded from youtube. 

- The same people working on this weeks editing is the same as last week. We didn't have to as much as last week because we did majority of the work already. Me, Peter, and Courtney all worked together to find a good background song to put behind the film. 

- The titles and fonts we used were the same as last week and we didn't add anything this week. 
Also, we did not add any new video effects and transitions because we finished it all last week. 

-For audio, we watched tutorials on how to legally upload songs to your computer and then into iMovie, the editor we used. We then figured it out on YouTube studio, and successfully uploaded the song to iMovie. 

- Some problems faced was trying to figure out how to upload the music. We had a lot of options and ideas that we liked but most of them were copyrighted and we couldn't download them.

- Our solution to these problems was looking up tutorials on how to find the legal music that we could download. We followed the tutorials and picked a song that fits the video well. 

- We spent 2 class periods trying to figure out how to get the music on the computer. Then once we figured it out, we spent another class period trying to pick a song that we all agreed on. 

-Overall, editing went very well this week and we finished the video completely. 

Week 6 - Editing

 - This was my screen during editing. I decided to use iMovie to edit our film because that is the software that I feel the most comfortable with. Overall, iMovie gave me no problems while editing and everything went smoothly.

-This is a photo of my group members working on the editing. We all worked together to decide what order the clips are in and made sure they were all the same length. 

     

 

- We decided to put the titles at the end of the opener to make it a little more dramatic. The title that we came up with is, "The Next Level". We felt as if this title portrayed our theme well of going to college to play baseball which is the next level for high school athletes. We chose the title to go into the middle of the frame.

-Some of the video effects and transitions we used were in between each clips. We used the fade away transition for most of them because they fit the best. We also used cross dissolve, and cross blur. 

- So far in our editing process, we have not used any audio but we decided weeks ago that there would be no dialogue in our film and it would just be music. We haven't decided the song yet but that is going to be our next step for editing. 

- We discovered not many problems while editing. I was successfully able to transfer all the film over to my computer from my phone to upload into iMovie.  The only trouble was finding everything but once I noticed the problem, I fixed it right away by making a folder, and putting all the videos and pictures into the one folder. This fixed the problem immediately and made it easier to upload videos. 

- I took the whole week to edit and most of the time was transferring all the videos to my computer and making sure my team members had all the clips needed for their blogs. I spent 2 hours straight on the editing of the video making sure all the clips were flowing together and all were up for the right amount of time. 

- Me, Courtney, and Peter all worked on the editing together. They gave their ideas of what clip should go where and I used my computer to put it all together and edit the video. 

- While I was editing all the clips into the final video I noticed we had some extra clips that we did not have to use. This happened because we recorded more than enough clips just incase we would of found issues in the clips later on in the editing process. 

Week 2- Beginning to film

 This week was our second week of filming. Me and my two partners, Courtney and Peter, were able to get onto the field this week. We completed all of the shots we needed for our movie opener this week.

We did not have any issues either. We worked and planned out our day of filming very well. We made sure we would be able to get on the field by having an administrator take us out to the field and unlocked all the gates for us. We also made sure we had all the equipment needed such as cleats, gloves, balls, and bats. Luckily, the weather and the lighting was perfect for our day of filming.

The first to pictures we got from filming this week are me and Peter fielding the ball and throwing to first. These shots play a big role in our movie opener because the majority of the film is Peter and I playing baseball. Courtney took these photos while she was filming for us.

These 3 photos are from the shots we took of me pitching and Peter catching. These are also shots featured in our movie opener of Peter and I practicing.

This picture is of Courtney who is acting as our college recruiter from Florida Gulf Coast University. This is a very important scene in our movie because this is when Peter and I notice the scout sitting in the stands of our baseball team. Then we go over to her and introduce ourselves which then leads us into the next scene of the movie opener.

Our last scene shown in the picture is when me and Peter go to a table outside the baseball field and talk to Courtney, the college coach. This is when Peter and I sign the paper committing to play baseball to  FGCU. Then, the screen goes black and shoes the name of our movie, "The Next Level".

Overall our second week of filming was very successful. We ran into no issues and we planned very well. We also worked very well together and got things done efficiently. 

Week 1 Beginning to film

Me and my group decided to start filming this week. We decided to clips this week that didn't require going all the way out to the baseball field because we did not have enough time this week. So we decided to film clips such as putting the clips on and walking to the field.

This is Courtney taking a picture of me and Peter walking out to the baseball field which will be the first scene of our movie opener. We did it by the entrance towards all the schools fields. We couldn't go closer to the field because the gates were locked which were our first obstacle. So we improvised and did what we could for this scene.

Next we decided to film the scenes of me and Peter tying our cleats which is going to be a close up shot for our movie opener. We did these outside the field and me and Peter both got our cleats and tied them while Courtney video taped us. 

3. 

Our next shot that we filmed is me and Peter stretching getting ready to throw to each other. Courtney got good angles and good lighting of us on grass fielding. The picture above is a picture of Courtney filming us while we started to stretch. This is going to be the fourth clip in our movie film.

Today we faced the challenge of not being able to get onto the field but we worked it out and filmed the parts this week that we don't need on the field. Next week we are going to make sure we have a key to the field so we can shoot the shots that need to be on the field. We have about 4 more shots to film and then all we have to do is edit it together and add the background music and effects. 

Q3 week 3 - preparing to film

Actors- Courtney (FGCU Scout), Theresa and Peter (athletes). 

Costumes- Theresa and Peter (Softball/Baseball clothes including cleats), Courtney (FGCU gear)

Props- Softball/Baseball bats, gloves, balls, cleats for Theresa and Peter. FGCU folders and clipboard for Courtney.

Location- The Lely High School baseball field, the bleachers outside the field, and tables by the field. 

Dates and times- Unsure about the date but planning on filming next week or the week after. (Week of the 8th or 15th). Planning on filming after school and sports practices so around 4:30 or 5:00.

Scripts- Going off of the storyboard we created last week. Only dialogue will be between Theresa and Peter talking about who the lady (Courtney) is sitting at the bleachers, and also when Courtney is talking to the two athletes. The rest will be music. 

Film equipment- Theresa's phone using the regular camera app so then editing can be done on the same phone.

We plan on using establishing shots, close ups, extreme close ups, and pan shots. 

Initial Storyboard

 

Me, Peter, and Courtney first decided to make the plot of what the movie would be so then we can decide what the intro would showcase. We decided that the movie would be about Theresa and Peter, the two baseball players, and their journey of moving on from high school baseball to college baseball and Florida Gulf Coast University. Our movie would be about Theresa and Peters experience at FGCU and playing a college sport. We all agreed on naming the movie "The Next Level". Then we started planning our movie intro. We all said that it should start with Peter and Theresa at their high school and that the intro would show how they got to play at college. 

The first clip is going to be Peter and Theresa walking out to get to the field and getting ready to warm up and practice. There will definitely be an establishing shot to show the main setting. The next clip will be in the dugout and show all the equipment. Some camera angles that will be used will be close ups to make it seem dramatic and a high angle shot to make sure the angle shows all of the equipment. Next is Theresa and Peter playing on the field and there will be full shots of us throwing to each other. Next scene is when we realize the lady (Courtney), sitting in the bleachers. There will be a far shot showing Courtney and then a two shot of Theresa and Peter talking and looking confused. Then, the next scene is all 3 of the characters talking and Courtney explaining how she is a college coach and wants to recruit Theresa and Peter. Then the final scene is Courtney sliding a scholarship package to the athletes and then the screen goes black to create drama. 

We decided that there will be background music throughout the whole intro and also a voice over at times through certain scenes. We all worked well creating the story board and split the work and were able to work together.

Summary- 

Overall all the movie openers had a good amount of different camera angles and shots. I also feel like all the openers choice of music fit well and played a big part in the videos especially the horror/drama movies. My favorite one was "Rise", because it kind of had the same ideas that me, Peter, and Courtney had, of it being based off sports and starting off with skills of the sport. This movie opener also helped me start creating our story board and all the other videos as well gave me some ideas and inspiration.

Semester Exam - Film Opening Analysis of Black Mirror (season 3, episode 4, San Junipero)

 In the movie, “Black Mirror”, there are many film elements shown within the first couple minutes. Within the first five minutes I was able to understand elements such as editing, sound, mise-en-scene, and camera shots. Also, within the beginning of the movie, I was able to get a quick understanding of the three main characters, Yorkie, Wes, and Kelly. With all of these elements, it gives me somewhat of an idea of how the movie will play out.

To begin with, sound played a big role in the beginning of the movie. Automatically in the first minute, when the people pulled up in the car you can hear music which was digetic sound. This helped me understand the time frame this movie is taking place in. Because I could recognize the song, I knew it was most likely taking place in the 80s. Another form of digetic sound I noticed was the music inside the club, which also hinted to it being the 80s. When Yorkie was first walking on the street outside the club, you can hear the music coming from the club. The sound is muffled and that tells the audience how loud it is and could represent that it is so loud that she can not hear herself think, which is why the sound is muffled. Also, because the sound is muffled it makes it seem like Yorkie is nervous or scared of going into the club. Also, the music inside the club showed sound perspective. This showed how loud the music actually is. I also noticed synchronous sound. This is when Kelly is walking into the club and you can hear her heels clicking on the sidewalk. Sound also played a big role of the friendship that was being created between Kelly and Yorkie. Kelly came over and was talking to the guy she came with getting him to leave so she can talk to Yorkie. This can be seen as symbolism later in the movie if their friendship leads to something. 

The next film editing strategy that I noticed is mise-en-scene. I specifically noticed the costume first. As soon as the people came into the shot I saw their outfits and how they don't look modern and how their outfits are outdated. This gave me another clue that this movie is taking place in the 80s. This established a theme right away. Also regarding costume and the characters' outfits you can tell the difference between people. For example, Kelly’s outfit is more in your face and loud, while Yorkie's outfit is a lot quieter and makes you realize she will be quiet and shy.  A big part of mise-en-scene that I noticed as well was the lighting. In the demonstration of the lighting, the whole movie so far was lowkey light and the main lighting was in the club with the bright flashing neon lights. 

Regarding editing and camera shots, there were only a couple noticeable editing techniques that I found. First, there was a contrast from when the film starts. The woman is outside the club and it seems very dull and quiet. Then quickly, the editing strategy is a quick cut into the club with loud music and people talking very loud, so it was a very different location and setting. Also, in the club when Yorkie is playing a video game, another character comes up to her and asks to play a car game. There is a camera shot used while showing the video game. The shot is a close up and it zooms in on a car crashing in the game. Yorkie sees the crash and it shakes her up and she gets weirded out and looks like it affected her. The music changed to a fast paced sound which symbolizes that she experienced something or something traumatizing is happening or happened. Another camera shot I noticed was a dolly shot which followed one of the characters in the club. This linked to a panning shot / establishing shot which showed the whole setting and gave me an understanding of the club. An editing technique noticed was a cut shot. This was a cut shot from when Yorkie was on one side of the street and then Wes, and Kelly were on the other side of the street. 

Overall, in the first five minutes I noticed a bunch of film elements including sound, mise-en-scene, shots, and editing.These contributed to the movie in several ways and will most likely make another appearance later in the movie.

Film Opening Research #2- Paul Blart Mall Cop

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?

There are 3 titles displayed in the opening sequence to the film. The first title displayed is "Columbia", the entertainment company. Next is, "Happy Madison Productions", the production company. Finally, the 3rd title displayed is the title of the movie, "Paul Blart Mall Cop".

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? 

The image that is prioritized in the opening sequence is the badge, which clearly looks like a type of officer badge. This shows that the movie will be about a cop associated with the title.. Mall Cop.

What connotations do the images carry? 

The connotations that image carries is that the movie and characters will probably be dramatic in a comedic way. This is because the movie is already taking the mall badge very seriously even in the opening sequence. 

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? 

Comedy is reinforced right away in the beginning of the movie. It shows men training to be a police officer, and it shows strong tall men and then zooms into Paul Blart, who is a lot bigger but shorter than the other men. It then shows him passing out during the police officer course. He then becomes a mall cop and their is comedy here by him going from training to be a police officer to becoming a mall cop. There are symbolic codes here because the movie started by showing a very serious looking badge but then he is a mall cop. 

How does the film establish an enigma from the outset? 

The film establishes an enigma from the outset because at first the audience does not know what type of cop he is. Then when they show all of the super fit men becoming police officers, the audience assumes he is a police officer but then the camera shows Paul Blart who does not look like someone who can complete the course. So there is a question of what is this guy doing here and why is he considered a cop. 

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? 

One of the strategies used is the use of the actors. Kevin James is the main character/actor in the movie. He is well known in the comedy industry and using him as the author attracted the audience that likes comedic movies because they know it will be funny if Kevin James is in it. 

How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques. 

Technology has been used effectively especially with camera angles. For example, while showing the men in the police training program the camera shot is an eye level shot showing all the men side by side. Then when it gets to Paul Blart, it is a high angle shot shown from above to show the difference in height between Paul Blart and the other guys. This use of camera angles was comedic and fit the film well. 

Film opening research #1- Murder Mystery

The first and only title displayed is "Happy Madison Productions." This is the production company that produced the movie. This movie doesn't display the the movie title "Murder Mystery."

In the opening sequence, the images that are prioritized is first, 2 men walking down the street. This shows that these 2 men are going to be main characters throughout the movie. Another opening seen is that a female is doing hair at her job, a hair salon, and she is talking about how her husband promised her a trip to Europe 15 years ago but they have never went. Then, the camera zooms into a picture on her work desk of Europe, which her husband gave to her. 

What connotations do the images carry? 

The first scene, with the 2 men walking has the connotation of it being gloomy and dark outside, this goes with the title, Murder Mystery, and builds a little suspense. Also right behind where they are standing is a New York Police Department car. In the next scene, the connotation carried is it brings in humor letting the audience know it will be a comedy. In the scene in the hair dresser there are a couple dry jokes made. Also, it showed that this movie would be based around the trip to Europe. 

How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? 

The genre of horror comedy is reinforced through symbolic and technical codes. For example, technical codes are seen with the zoom in of the picture of Europe. Also, the comedy genre is noticeable especially in the hair salon scene but is also present when the two men are walking. They make quick one liner jokes, what Adam Sandler is known for. 

How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?

This film establishes an enigma from the outset by creating a question of are they going to Europe or not. Also what is going to happen in Europe if they do not go. Also, in the beginning of the movie, when the two men are walking and talking, one of them mentions that they didn't pass a certain test and that the wife will be mad. So another question/puzzle arises of what was the test, why did he not pass, and why would the wife be mad. 

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? 

One of the strategies used is using popular and well known actors that younger people around the age 16-30 would know. Also the use of actors go very well with the movie being a comedy movie. For example, the main actor is Adam Sandler who is well known for comedy and also younger people are aware of him. Another actor that appeals to the audience of the younger population is Jennifer Anniston. Also, in the begging there is upbeat music which is a strategy for most comedy films.

How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques. 

Technology has been used effectively in the opening of the movie. For example, the camera is following the two men walking while also showing the background with a darker lighting. While the two men are walking the camera angle used is an eye level shot. This is used to create emotion and create a connection with the characters. Also there are frequent zooms in the first 2 minutes of the movie. This is using a tight shot camera angle. This is when the camera zooms into the phone when the husband gets a text message, and also when the camera zooms into the picture of Europe. Transitions and editing techniques are seen when the scene is changed and a quick cut is used to change scenes.

Film Viewing Practice Essay "Agent Carter"

     To begin with, the film "Agent Carter" is about a woman who defies gender stereotypes to work an office job while also going on secret missions. While discussing camera shots and angles, editing, sound, and mise-en-scene, the film uses these to help the viewers understand the film and components of the characters. 

    The camera shots are used to construct meaning and make emotions. You can see this in close shots, which makes viewers focus on the emotion in the characters face. In Agent Carter specifically it is seen when the woman is trying to communicate with Steve. You can also see establishing shots in the film. These shots help the viewers understand the setting. There is a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge which shows that everything is taking place.

    In the beginning of the film, there are editing strategies right away. There is a clear contrast begin used between Agent Carter and the man on the space ship. The editing is the film going. back and forth between the two shots. This is used to demonstrate the dire situation that the man is in and what is going on with other people at the same time. This could also be seen as simultaneity because both are happing at the same time. This is evident because they are having a conversation while the edit is taking place. There is another clear example of contrast when Agent Carter is at the office and two men go outside to meet her but there is another man inside. The man inside is eating and reading while paying no attention to the events outside. But, the mood is very serious and you can even hear crickets in the background. When the fight breaks out the film goes back and forth between the inside and outside of the office. 

    Another component that plays a big role in this film and many others is sound. There is background music in many scenes. This adds to the mood of the scene and also helps the viewers understand the emotions that are portrayed in the film.  One example is the scene where Agent carter is in the office handing out papers and sees a picture of the man in here desk. This is when the music begins. This shows the seriousness and the emotion she feels when she sees the picture. The music stops when her boss interrupts showing that she stops thinking about the photo and the mood is over. The same music appears again which reestablishes the mood. The film also uses post synchronization dubbing like sound of punches and glass shattering when Carter attacks the two men. The sound portrays the pain she is putting on the two men. The horror sounds create suspense, which is scene when the other man picks up the gun.

     While discussing mis-en-scene, this is mostly scene in this film through the setting. This film has a very detailed and specific setting which helps viewers understand the situation. Te offices and control room that Agent Carter are in show what kind of a person Carter is. The lighting also plays a role in this. It is dark and gloomy which shows seriousness and suspense. The costume shows Agent Carter as a woman who is professional and takes her job very seriously. Agent Carter uses all these elements to show herself as a hardworking woman in the workplace which adds to the value of the film.

Q2 week 1

Mise en scene 

I chose to comment on the mise en scene on the movie "Moana". I chose to comment on this movie because it is one of my favorite movies and I believe that the the setting, costumes, and more are all appealing and play a big role in how good movie is. 

Setting- Moana takes place 3,000 years ago in the islands of Polynesia, and area that includes Hawaii, Tonga, and Tahiti. The movie starts by opening up to a majestic bird flying through an open area showing beautiful waters and pretty green land. The movie Moana used deep space which is when there are important components in the from located both close to and far form the camera. It is used to emphasize the distance between objects and or characters as well as any obstacles that exist between them. This is seen in Moana when sees the glowing rock (heart of the island) that she wants to get. The strategy of deep space is used because Moana is trying to get the rock but things keep getting in the way and the distance keeps getting further and further. 

Lighting- For the most part the lighting in the movie is natural because of the setting. The setting plays a big role in the lighting because on the island, the lighting is from the sun. The lighting I would say is fairly bright because the sun and the reflection of the sun on the water. Relating to the three point lighting, I would say that the closest is the high key lighting. I would say this because the lighting is bright and gives off a happy vibe instead of a gloomy, sad, or suspicious vibe like low key lighting would. But in the beginning of the movie, there is a little low key lighting. This is seen right in the beginning when the story is being told and it gives off a mysterious and suspicious vibe. The overall lighting of the whole movie gives off the mood of beachy and an island life.

Costume- Costume is the most noticeable aspect of mise en scene. In Moana, the costume plays a big role in the movie and the plot in the movie. The costumes in this movie show that the characters are islanders and their outfits are something you would see a tribe wear. Moana, the main character has on a tapa, which is a textile made from a mulberry tree, and her skirt is made from pandanas. In the movie you can tell that all their outfits would be handmade and not bought. 

Staging- Because the movie is a cartoon, it is not that easy to write on the staging of the movie. One method I noticed in the movie was blocking. This is when the actors are positioned to show dominance within each other. I saw this in Moana when Moanas dad is yelling at Moana for going to close to the water. The dad is positioned to be "hovering" Moana while yelling at her. This shows dominance and that the dad is clearly in charge.
